Legacy’s Response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide

Legacy supports the findings of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide and recognises the urgent need to address the issues it has highlighted.

The findings highlight the urgent need for systemic changes to prevent further tragedies within the veteran community.

For over 100 years, Legacy has been and will continue to be the national veteran family organisation. Legacy is dedicated to supporting the implementation of these recommendations and ensuring that our veterans and their families receive the care and support they deserve. Legacy commits to:

  • Support for families:  Legacy acknowledges the profound and long-lasting impact of trauma on families. The risk of intergenerational trauma due to suicide is real. Legacy fully supports and is grateful for the recognition of families by the Royal Commission. Service affects not just the veteran but the family as well. Families are integral to the health and wellbeing of serving and ex-serving ADF members.
  • Collaboration with ex-service organisations and policymakers:  Legacy is committed to working collaboratively with other ex-service organisations (ESOs) and community organisations to respond holistically to the Royal Commission’s findings. We will be actively engaging with government and policymakers to drive positive change and secure the resources we need to enhance and sustain our support.
  • Advocacy for change:  We commit to providing ongoing support and advocacy for families, ensuring they are not left to navigate processes alone. We welcome legislative changes to simplify the application process for supporting impacted families.

Chairman of Legacy Australia, Wayne McNee notes, “The Royal Commission’s recommendations are a crucial step towards understanding and addressing the mental health challenges faced by our veterans and their families. Legacy is dedicated to supporting the implementation of these recommendations and ensuring that our veterans and their families receive the care and support they deserve.”
