Construction is underway on a new Legacy House for Brisbane

Construction is now in full swing on Legacy Brisbane’s new Legacy House at Greenslopes! The New Legacy House will deliver a new standard of care for veteran’s families providing wraparound support  with its veteran and family social prescribing organisations of Legacy, RSL Queensland, Mates4Mates and Open Arms. These services will be connected into the existing Greenslopes Private Hospital, the Keith Payne VC Mental Health Unit and Gallipoli Medical Research.

Legacy House-Greenslopes is the result of significant Australian and International studies into better care systems. The evidence is clear, a collaborative, connected and coordinated care system that includes  both clinical and non-clinical support needs of the family, not just the veteran, produces better outcomes.

Why is Legacy House Brisbane needed?

Australian defence forces have just come out of 20 years in Afghanistan – our longest war ever. It’s clear those veterans and their families deserve our support. Their needs, and those of all the widows and families from previous conflicts mean that the demand for Legacy’s services is very high and will remain so in future.

The needs of veterans’ families have changed substantially, and so have social norms and standards. While there has been a reduction in the number of Australian armed services personnel who lose their lives in service, we must still support the families of veterans who lose their health. These families have complex, multi-disciplinary needs. The chronic and acute mental health crisis among armed forces personnel and veterans is also having a profound impact on their families – and Legacy is an essential part of the care response.

How will Legacy House support veterans and their families?

In line with Legacy’s renewed focus of looking after families with a veteran, the new Legacy House will deliver services in a collaborative model of care. The value of this model of care cannot be understated. It will make such a difference to families with a veteran, the veterans themselves and Legatees, to be able to come to one place and have a comprehensive range of support services available.
The location of the new house in the Health and Medical Research precinct at Greenslopes is a perfect fit for this expanded model. It offers a truly family-focussed solution.

Legacy House will also provide complex case management to families with a veteran in need while continuing to serve our traditional widows who continue frequent Greenslopes Hospital in their ageing years. The changing needs of veteran families have seen an increase in families seeking our support where the veteran is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues. These families have complex, multi-disciplinary needs and we believe the new Legacy House will be well placed to better meets the needs of these families.

Other Veterans’ Groups based within Legacy House:

Mates4Mates – providing support for individuals and their partners
RSL Queensland – parenting and family support
Open Arms – ongoing mental health support
