Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC recently attended the 2022 Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award NSW Final on 18 October.

Eight students presented a prepared speech and an impromptu speech about a subject matter of their choice while considering Legacy values and how one of these might fit within the broader context of the thought-provoking and engaging topic they chose to address.

Marion Catholic College Shirine Nehme was awarded first prize in the awards, with Anhaar Kareem (Al Noori Muslim School) announced as runner-up.

Other state finalists included Violet FitzSimons (Oxley College), Saanvi Kashyap (Baulkham Hills High School), Jio Yim (Presbyterian Ladies’ College), Rowan Myers (Crestwood High School), Jenny Xu (Pymble Ladies’ College) and Jordan Steel (Marrickville High School).

Legatees Tim Becker and Doug Devlin were also in attendance to represent Sydney Legacy at the State Final.

Now in its 34th year, the state-wide event allows secondary students aged 12 to 14 to compete in public speaking before local groups.

The Legacy Junior Public Speaking Awards aims to build students’ confidence when speaking in front of an audience and raise awareness and appreciation of Legacy’s values and the importance of remembrance.

State finalists received a silver medallion and a commendation certificate. From Sydney Legacy, the NSW winner and runner-up also received trophies and a cheque.

Shirine and Anhaar will head to Launceston on 14 November to represent NSW at the national final.

Sydney Legacy would like to thank the NSW Department of Education Arts Unit for their continued support of this event.
