Legacy is excited to share that we are embarking on a ‘Trek to Remember’ of Gallipoli & Turkey’s Lycian Way this November to raise funds for veterans’ families – and we ...
The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay has continued its journey down the coast of Queensland stopping at Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Maryborough and the Sunshine Coast.
The Mackay Relay began at Mackay Town Hall with the Torch travelling a 7.1km route throughout the city and passing sites such as the Komiatum Barracks and the WW1 cenotaph in Jubilee Park before concluding at Mackay Regional Council.
It was an honour to Victoria Cross recipient Keith Payne as our first torch bearer. Keith is a Vietnam veteran who was awarded the VC for gallantry and bravery in wartime and is one of four living Australian recipients. We would also like to thank Mayor of Mackay Regional Council Greg Williamson and President of Mackay Legacy Les Palmer for taking part.
The Rockhampton relay followed soon after. Starting at the Rockhampton War Memorial, the Torch travelled a 9.5km route throughout the city before concluding at Rockhampton Regional Council. We would like to thank Rockhampton Mayor Tony Williams for his support and for taking part as a torch bearer.
Next up was Bundaberg. Starting at the Bundaberg Barrel, the Torch was carried 7.7km throughout the city. Thank you to the 20 wonderful torch bearers who made the day so special including Mayor of Bundaberg Jack Dempsey.
The Maryborough relay kicked off the next day. Starting at Maryborough Cricket Club, the Torch travelled 4.3km throughout the city before concluding at Maryborough Town Hall Green. We would like to thank Cr George Seymour, Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor for taking part as one of our torch bearers.
The Sunshine Coast lived up to its name and produced beautiful weather for the relay. Beginning at Mooloolaba Spit Park, the Torch travelled 6.1km along the coastline before concluding at Cotton Tree Cenotaph where the cauldron was lit by Legacy youth member Georgia Hayward.
A huge thank you to all of our torch bearers. We have loved hearing your experiences with Legacy and this relay would not be possible without your support in our centenary year.
The Torch will continue to make its way down the east coast.
Next stop Brisbane.
