About us - Lachlan Legacy

Club history

The origins of the Lachlan Legacy Group began in 1946 with Keith Hastings and Dick Turner. Dick was responsible for the correspondence and Keith did the visiting of families. By 1947 between them they had enrolled and looked after no less than 30 families and now looked to expanding the group.

On 7 November 1947 the Board of Management of Sydney Legacy formally presented the Charter to operate as a Contact Group in the name of Legacy under the guidance of Sydney Legacy. At this ceremony five new Legatees were initiated giving the Group a strength of seven legatees. This group made rapid progress in enrolments and skill to such an extent that the Board of Management of Sydney Legacy on 1 December 1948 resolved to sponsor an application to Legacy Coordinating Council that the Group be elevated to the status of an autonomous Legacy Club.

On 19 March 1949 with ceremony at an Inauguration Dinner in the Forbes Town Hall, the Lachlan Legacy was presented with the Club Charter by Legatee John L. Hastings, President of Sydney Legacy, which the club still holds today. The Lachlan Legacy Club currently incorporates the towns of Canowindra, Eugowra, Condobolin, Cowra, Forbes, Grenfell, Lake Cargelligo, Parkes, Trundle and West Wyalong. All these towns have Contact Group’s except for Condobolin where we have one Legatee.

Lachlan Legacy Club has 56 members both active and reserve.

Lachlan Legacy Club meet every two months (February, April, June, August, October, December) at 2.30pm at various locations around the Lachlan Legacy Club area. For information on these meeting contact Helen at the Forbes office on 02-6852 2041 Mon-Wed between 9.00am and 2.00pm or email Helen at lachleg@westserv.net.au

Torch Bearers

This group of dedicated women formed this fund-raising group in 1945 after WWII to raise funds for the widows and children of their comrades, up until that time members of Legacy could personally raise adequate funds.

At a meeting in Sydney was called which was attended by 750 women including the heads of all women’s groups who had worked in various capacities during the war. It was from this meeting that the Torch Bearers for Legacy was formed with other capital cities following suit.

Torch Bearer Groups operate throughout New South Wales with three groups operating in Lachlan. The Forbes Torch Bearers was formed on 30 July 1946 at a meeting that called to establish a Torch Bearer Group for Legacy in the areas of the Municipality of Forbes and in the Shire of Jemalong.

From this meeting other Groups were formed within the Lachlan Legacy area and continue today to support the widows and families of war veterans.

Apart from fund raising activities such as street stalls the main fund raiser is during Legacy Week with sale of Legacy badges, this is usually conducted on the Friday during Legacy Week where Legatees and Torchies visit the businesses, pubs and clubs around town to sell badges.

The Parkes Torchies meet every 3rd Monday of the month at 10:15am at the Parkes Services Club with about 30 members.

The Forbes Torchies meet the last Wedensday each month at the Forbes Services Memorial club at 10:30 morning tea and meeting at 11:00am with about 30 members .

Cowra Torchies meet every 4th Monday at the Cowra Sevices Club at 11:00am also with about 30 members. Unfortunately this group gone into recession as they were unable to form a committe for 2013.

All groups welcome new members and no you do not need to be a war widow or any other kind of widow to join a Torch Bearers group, they will welcome anyone who embraces the Legacy Ideals, in fact they will accept males as well as you are prepared to fund raise.
