Rebecca’s story is a real example of the harsh reality many people experience as the partner of a veteran.
Her husband Andrew, a combat engineer in the Army, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, leaving Rebecca at home with their son, Jordan.
When he returned with PTSD, the impact of his service became clear, affecting his wellbeing and return to normal life.
“I was 22 with a one-year-old…not knowing the boy I loved was coming home as a man I didn’t recognise.”
Over the next few years, they faced challenges that took a toll on their growing family. This included relocating across the country twice and the heavy impact PTSD had on Andrew, Rebecca and their three young boys, Jordan, Mason and Henry.
Everything changed for Rebecca when she received a call from Legacy in 2021. Andrew, who she had now separated from, had been admitted to the National Centre for Veterans’ Healthcare and asked if there was someone who could support his ex-wife and children.
“My first reaction was: ‘I’m not old, nor am I a widow. I don’t feel like I deserve this kind of help.”
Legacy stepped in when Rebecca needed it most, providing financial assistance for school uniforms, childcare fees and extracurricular activities, giving her children opportunities to grow and thrive.
Legacy has also assisted Rebecca with grants for university and a laptop for her studies while she completes her degree in primary school education.
“Because of Legacy, I’ve been able to attend university with a little less stress, knowing that someone believes in me and is invested in my success.”
