Children’s Education and Development

Our services - Hobart Legacy

The first priority has always been to support a secure home environment and ensure the children can reach their potential

Legacy has always had a great interest in education and youth advancement. Legacy camps and other youth programs (such as Hobart Legacy’s Junior Public Speaking Awards) gave juniors the opportunity for cultural, physical and recreational growth. While the number of Junior Legatees has decreased and Hobart Legacy camps are a thing of the past, Hobart Legacy continues to provide educational assistance for Junior Legatees and funds them to participate in developmental training camps now run by the Special Air Services Regiment at Busselton in Western Australia. Currently, Hobart’s Junior Legatees include two children living in the Philippines.

Legacy Children’s Christmas Party

Christmas time is not the same for a family who have lost a parent. Each year Hobart Legacy brings together those families with children for a special Christmas Party. Older ones help younger ones and share their difficulties as they play together, have a visit from Santa Claus and enjoy a delicious Christmas lunch.

Hobart Junior Legatees joined students from other Australian Legacy Clubs
at a recent Florence Foundation Camp in Canberra.

Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award

Below is the information for Schools, Colleges and Competitors throughout Tasmania relating to the conduct of Regional Semi-finals and State Final for the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award.

The competition has been endorsed and supported by the Department of Education and the Arts in Tasmania since its entry into the National competition in 1996.

This event is for students between the ages of 12 and 14 years. Entry is free and the public are encouraged to attend and hear these talented students speak.

The Regional and State Competitions will be held using the same operational charter as the National Competition.

An Entry Form and Interview Information sheet is attached as Annex D, and Annex E respectively and are to be completed by each competitor and returned to Hobart Legacy by the due date indicated on the entry form.

Entry requirements are as indicated in the LJPSA National Guidelines and Procedures and to be eligible to enter this year’s competition students must be aged 12 or above, but under 15 years of age on 1st January. Schools may enter up to three students as competitors.

Detailed venue locations and timings for Regional semi-finals, will be advised after finalisation of nominations from participating schools.

The competition takes place at Legacy House in Hobart and Launceston in August each year.
Competitors are reminded that they are expected to dress in their school uniform or in an appropriate manner if a uniform is not part of a school's requirement.

Placegetters from each Regional semi-final will be invited to compete at the State Final, which will be held in October at Legacy House, 159 Macquarie Street, Hobart.

Placegetters (1st, 2nd and 3rd) will be selected at the State Final. The winner and runner-up will represent Tasmania at the National Final at Legacy’s expense. It is planned to hold the National Final in November in Melbourne.

In the event of either of the nominated finalists being unable to attend, the 3rd placegetter will be invited to compete at the National Final.

Where necessary, travel and accommodation to the State Final, for competitors and a Parent/Guardian, will be provided by Legacy.

Travel to Regional semi-finals is to be at the cost of competitors or, if necessary, as arranged by Legacy.

No other financial assistance will be available.

All Regional semi-finalists will receive a certificate to indicate their participation.

State finalists will receive a Certificate and a medallion. A cheque for $200, $100 and $70 will also be awarded respectively for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters.

It is anticipated that the competition will generate publicity for all Schools involved and Legacy. Legacy will provide press releases to local media in relation to the competition.

The Organising Committees of the Regional and State Finals are pleased to acknowledge the assistance gratefully provided by the Max Bruce Trust Pty Ltd without whose assistance it would not be possible to conduct this competition.
