On Monday 29 August, Legatees, beneficiaries, NSW dignitaries and Australian Defence Force Personnel joined Sydney Legacy at the annual Legacy Week NSW Launch.

Held at the Cenotaph in Martin Place, the occasion included a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the veterans who have served for the country. This was followed by official services paying tribute to Australia’s veterans and their families.

The ceremony was hosted by Legacy Australia ambassador and former Legacy Junior Gordon Bray AM, and marked the commencement of five days of badge selling in the Sydney CBD and across NSW, an effort that saw volunteers fundraising on the street return to the CBD for the first time since 2019.

Special guests in attendance included Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Lynne Cosgrove, Greg Warren MP, Air Commodore Carl Newman, Rear Admiral Jonathan Earley, Brigadier Malcolm Wells and Queen Dunbar (Australian War Widows NSW).

Legacy Juniors Jordan and Mason Burey read The Ode and laid a wreath at the service and beneficiary Monica Weisser spoke about her experience with Legacy before also laying a wreath.

For 80 years, the Legacy Week campaign has raised awareness and vital funds for veterans’ families across Australia. Your generous support during our 2022 appeal has helped us raise over $500,000.

These vital funds will create life-changing outcomes for the families of those who have served our nation. This could mean groceries for a struggling family, education opportunities for a single mother returning to work, or leadership camps for our kids.

For the past two years, lockdowns have prevented our Legacy Week volunteers from fundraising in the local community as usual. 2022 was especially significant, marking 80 years since the Legacy Week Appeal first began.
